Neck pain can happen for a wide range of reasons. Auto accidents often result in neck pain, as the sudden impact causes the neck to hyper-extend well beyond its natural range. Neck pain also frequently happens after a person slips and falls or trips and falls. People who have poor posture may have a tendency to develop neck pain. Anyone who works at a desk, craning their neck forward slightly towards a computer screen may develop neck pain over time. As the body ages, natural spinal degeneration occurs, and this is another potential cause of neck pain. Many people find it surprising that neck pain can result from excess weight. This happens because the weight is often centered in the abdominal area, which causes the spine to be pulled out of alignment. This affects both the lower (lumbar) spine and the upper (cervical) spine. Arthritis, fibromyalgia, and many other conditions can also cause neck pain.
The chiropractor will work with the patient closely to determine the exact origin and cause of their neck pain. During a hands-on exam, the patient will respond to gentle manual stimuli from the chiropractor. The chiropractor will typically ask the patient to move their head and neck up, down, and to either side, so that movement can be properly evaluated. X-rays may also be done to get an even better view of the cervical spine area.
The treatment for neck pain depends on the specific patient. Typically, treatment begins by alleviating alignment problems that are the root of the pain. Additional physiotherapy such as moist heat application, ice packs, ultrasound therapy, and electrical muscle stimulation may also be helpful for neck pain sufferers.
